Bowel Screening Check

Take Control of Your Health – Get Screened for Bowel Cancer

Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the UK, with around 44,100 new cases diagnosed each year. Early detection saves lives – when caught at its earliest stage, bowel cancer is much more treatable.

Why is this important for you?

We are contacting you because:
✅ You have additional risk factors for bowel cancer.
✅ You were previously invited for screening but have not yet completed the test.

Even if you feel well and have no symptoms, bowel cancer can develop silently. Screening can detect early signs before symptoms appear, giving you the best chance of preventing or treating cancer early.

Symptoms of Bowel Cancer

Bowel cancer may not cause symptoms in the early stages, but when they do occur, they can include:
🔹 Changes in your stool – persistent diarrhoea, constipation, or softer stools that are unusual for you.
🔹 Blood in your stool – either red or black in colour.
 🔹 Bleeding from your bottom.
🔹 Feeling like you need to open your bowels even after just going.
🔹 Unexplained tummy pain, bloating, or a lump in your abdomen.
 🔹 Unintentional weight loss.
🔹 Feeling very tired for no reason.

Even if you don’t have symptoms, taking part in screening could save your life.

What is the Bowel Cancer Screening Test?

The Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) is a simple, at-home test that detects tiny, invisible traces of blood in your stool – an early warning sign of bowel cancer.

  • Easy to do at home – takes just a few minutes.
  • No hospital visits needed.
  • Free on the NHS.

If your test is negative, you won’t need to do anything, and you’ll be invited again for screening in two years as part of the national programme.

If your test is positive, you’ll be invited to discuss your results with a bowel cancer screening practitioner, who will explain the next steps, which may include a colonoscopy (camera test) to check your bowel more closely.
